material Contravention of CDP voted by County Council

According to a piece in the Irish Times, "COUNCILLORS IN Co Louth have voted to materially contravene the county development plan to grant permission for a supermarket on a greenfield site on the outskirts of Ardee near a link road with the M1 motorway." Curiously the councillors decided to go ahead with this despite the fact that the impact on Ardee traders has not been assesssed, there is no public transport option (the fact that people already walk along the hard shoulder of the link road is an accident waiting to happen); the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board pointed out that the impact on the local river was inadequate and that the treatment centre must be upgraded (not much chance of that in the next few years!) Dearey (GP) and Nash (Lab) were the only councillors to oppose the proposal. In an extraordianry assertion, Jim Lennon (FG), the proposer, stated that it was just what Ardee needed!!! (or was it just what Jim needed?)

  1. Having spent a very pleasant day in Ardee last week, enjoying the small shops and the variety of goods on offer, I think that a huge supermarket on the outskirts of the town would destroy it completely and rip out its heart. the supermarket would sell all the things on offer in the town probably at a cheaper price because of economics of scale, the local shops would not be able to compete and people would be left with less choice. Being forced also to use the car to get to the shops rather than daddling around on foot which is what I enjoyed. I certainly would not have visited Ardee to go to a supermarket!
